Mission Statement
The Hillel Children’s School at Yale helps young students discover positive Jewish identities. Our teachers devote their time and creativity to classroom discussions of Jewish values, ideas and traditions, and help our children understand the role that Judaism can play in their lives. Our goal is to help children grow to feel a part of the Jewish community at large through their participation in the Hillel school community and to help them appreciate their Jewish heritage.
Faculty
The faculty of the Hillel Children’s School is comprised of Yale students and are its greatest strength. These extraordinary young adults act as positive Jewish role models for our children and are loving, enthusiastic, dedicated teachers, equally committed to Judaism and education.
Program
Classes meet weekly on Sunday morning and follow the Yale academic calendar. The morning begins at 9:30 am and ends at noon. The Hillel Children’s School is committed to teaching Hebrew, prayers and blessings, Torah, Jewish holidays and traditions. The students learn through ideas and values that flow from Jewish texts and experiences. The age-appropriate curriculum includes history, modern Israel, Hebrew reading and writing, basic conversational and prayer Hebrew, the Bible and its impact on everyday life, observing Shabbat, tzedakah, Jewish ethics, mitzvah projects and community service. The school’s aim is to foster a Jewish consciousness that can be informed by knowledge and inquisitive exploration.
Families do not need to have any Yale affiliation to join the Hillel Children’s School.
